SOLUTIONS: DIY, Nontoxic All-Purpose Cleaner

Commercial cleaners are filled with toxic chemicals that enter your body via your skin and inhalation (dangerous for humans and pets!) and they are quite expensive so you are paying a lot of money to be exposed to toxins. That makes no sense. Instead, make your own nontoxic, effective all-purpose household cleanser— clean your counters, bathrooms, floors, or pretty much anything you like with it—for just pennies.

RECIPE

Peels from 3-5 oranges or 6-8 mandarins

A quart of distilled white vinegar

A quart-size mason jar w/lid

Empty spray bottle

.

DIRECTIONS

Fill the mason jar with the orange peels.

Pour in enough vinegar to fill the jar to the top

Put lid on tightly and let sit for 10 days.

After 10 days, strain out peels

Pour into an empty spray bottle, and use to clean your counters, bathrooms, floors, or pretty much anything you like!

Select artworks from Nigerian artist Njideka Akunyili:

“Nigeria is almost a third character in my work,” she said. “A lot of my work is about investigating my love for Nigeria and my life in America.

“I met my husband at college and there was some anxiety that if I married outside my culture I would lose my identity, but there is a space in my work where these things come together.”

Akunyili is hoping to help change attitudes to art in Nigeria, where she said appreciation is growing slowly.

“If I hadn’t left Nigeria, I wouldn’t be an artist, I would be a doctor,” she said. “When I told my parents I wanted to be an artist, they couldn’t get their heads around why an educated person who went to college in America would want to be an artist.

“If people think of artists, it’s somebody by the side of the road painting signs.”

“When I was young, the less Nigerian you were the cooler you were, but now we have gone back to tradition,” said Akunyili. “There’s a nice energy about the country that’s finally coming into its own.”

Dear friends,

My name is Alice N’Kom, and here in Cameroon I am one of the only attorneys who defends people who’ve been jailed because they are gay.

In the last two weeks violence against gay people in Cameroon has skyrocketed to unprecedented levels: the situation is quickly becoming a crisis. The president of Cameroon can put a stop to this, and if he feels enough pressure he will do so.

I’m watching police in Cameroon conduct an anti-gay crackdown - people have been arrested on charges of “homosexuality”. One of them, Jean-Claude, has been sentenced to 3 years in prison merely for sending a text message to another man. I’ve heard countless recent stories of homophobic violence throughout the country. I’m 66, and in ten years of defending lesbian, gay, bi and trans (LGBT) people in Cameroon, it has never been this bad.

Only one person can put an end to this gay bashing - President Paul Biya. He can stop the escalating crisis of homophobic roundups and attacks, and he can immediately release those arrested and call for the end of Cameroon’s laws against homosexuality.

Time is running out. I’m heading to confront the President with these demands. He will not be able to ignore a powerful outcry from every corner of the globe. I am counting on your help.
